On Wednesday we met a famous designer of golf courses who regaled us with his poetry recitations on Thursday night we enjoyed meeting a visionary in "green" engineering who had been in the field for nearly 20 years. Joni introduced the song this way on November 29, 1969. Just this past week, we met a couple of really interesting individuals at two different Palo Alto restaurant bars. Here, amidst serene gardens behind the coral-colored facade, you can still find the special. Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, who did their Rock and Roll Circus special in 1968, it did very well on MTV despite the very simple concept the network launched a few months before the song was released as a single, and they were desperate for big-name rock acts. Marc and I are both social and inquisitive creatures, and we end up meeting fascinating and friendly fellow bar-eaters wherever we go. Then they go to a bar and meet up with the rest of the band. The last point is probably most important. This late-1980s song about a man's many breakups shows George Strait's funny side. This playful 2004 song is one big play on words. There are many reasons we choose to do this: it requires less forethought than making a reservation, allows us to eat at virtually any restaurant-even the most popular and "hot" ones, and lends itself to a more casual, social dining experience. Anyone who has watched The Voice knows that Shelton has a sense of humor. My sweet husband Marc and I always eat at restaurant bars when it's just the two of us, as opposed to sitting at a table. We miss Mark Adams and Miles, and haven't been back since the new regime took over. I have to report that Oak City Grill (Menlo Park) would have made this list if it didn't recently get sold and clean house of a wonderful chef and entertaining bar staff. Best of all is the Bollywood music videos that are always on the screens above the bar. Mantra (Palo Alto): While the Indian-fusion food at Junoon is better, the sizeable bar at Mantra can't be beat. The menu is varied, and the food is reasonably priced and always very good. Orion is the globe-trotting main man behind the bar. Los Altos Grill (Los Altos): Always crowded but the bar is the best seat in the house. Izzy's (San Carlos): Tina is the BEST bartender in the Bay Area, and-while the menu is limited and food quality just "ok"-the scene at the bar is always fun. In no particular order, here is my first pass at sharing a handful of our favorites and why: In the Palo Alto area, the number is not sizeable, that's for sure. Fun and friendly bartenders who mix mean martinis are also important. The common denominator is great food and a lively, sizeable bar. Not all restaurants are "bar-diner friendly." In fact, Marc and I have a running joke about the handful of places we prefer to frequent.
